What do I wash my body with after a spray tan?
At your second shower (or your first if you have gotten an 8 hour tan,) wash with a mild shower gel or body wash, preferably moisturizing. (like Dr. Bronners, Beesential, Shea Moisture, Puracy, etc., but most others are fine too.) Use your hands or washcloth (gently, no scrubbing).
Dhesthetics has 2 recommended body washes to use in the shower to help preserve your tan. Aveevo Daily Moisturizing body wash or Cetaphil Daily Nourishing body wash. All of these body washes have great ingredients in them that will help to preserve not only your tan, but keep your skin healthy.
The very first shower you should take after your spray tanning session should always be a simple warm water rinse! Yup, that's right, no soap, body wash, hair washing, shaving or scrubbing.
We advise clients to moisturise daily and exfoliate around 5 - 7 days later. I do Fake Bake Spray Tanning, we advice clients to exfoliate proir to the tan and then approx 4 - 7 days after the tan to help the tan fade evenly. Hi there, never exfoliate immediately after a spray tan.
When Should You Moisturize After a Spray Tan? Because the tanning solution takes a little while to develop, you shouldn't start moisturizing until after your first shower, which should be at least eight hours after your tan but no more than 24 hours later.
Avoid long, hot showers or baths. Any products containing mineral oil, benzoyl peroxide, salicyclic acid, alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, malic or lactic acids, parabens and sulfates (see approved list of products below) • Avoid lotions with a high alcohol content such a CeraVe.
Be aware that spending any time in a hot tub, swimming pool, or the ocean—or even taking a long hot bath—can cause your Airbrush Tan to prematurely fade. Do not use aerosol or oil-based sunscreen! The chemicals in them will ruin your Airbrush Spray Tan.
Do not leave a product on overnight, if you have not experienced this product before (on yourself). Doing so can lead to over darkening, poor fading, off color, etc. If this is a specialized Rapid Acting/Early Shower off type blend, then follow the suggested manufacturer product directions for their blend.
Avoid heavily fragranced lotions as well as acne products and retinols as these can strip your tan more quickly. Products to avoid both before and after your tan include: Dove, Aveeno, Eucerin, Bath & Body Works, Suave, Nivea, Neutrogena, Ivory, Lubriderm, Dial, Olay, acne products, exfoliating products, and retinol.
Once you hop out of the booth and are getting dressed to leave, you should wear oversized, loose, dark-colored clothes for more reasons than one. The looser fabric will reduce sweating, which is important as excess sweating can cause your tan to become streaky and patchy.
How soon after spray tan can you shower?
We recommend waiting at least 4-8 hours after your spray tan before you shower for the first time, but don't wait more than 24 hours. When you shower for the first time after getting a spray tan, you'll probably see some golden glow wash down the drain, but don't worry!
Please note: the tan will continue to develop even after the shower, so do not be alarmed if you're not as tanned as you expect to be. The tan will continue to develop over the next 12-24 hours.
As a rule of thumb, you should wait for at least four to eight hours before showering so your tan can develop to its true color. Beyond that, it's best to wait 24 hours before washing your hair. This will give your tan time to set fully.
Apply a moisturizer or body butter to shower damp skin. (NOT Curel or Dove – these can ruin tans!) A few good choices would be Shea Moisture, CeraVe, Lubriderm, Vanicream, or Hempz, and some people prefer pure Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, or Cocoa Butter.
After your spray tan appointment, you will need to stay dry for 8 hours to let the tan develop. After that, you can shower off the solution with water only. Twenty-four (24) hours after your spray tan is when you should begin to use soap and moisturizing lotion.
Try not to wear a bra for at least 6 hours after your tan. Preferably, wait until after you take your first shower and the tan has fully set (usually 4-6 hours minimum after the tan, or the following morning). The straps can dig into your sides and back and cause streaking or dark spots.
You should advise your client to NOT use any commercial bar soaps either prior to the session and afterwards. Especially Dove soap, This is the worst thing to use and will cause the tan to fade and become patchy. It can also leave an invisible film preventing development of the spray tan.
Oil in all its forms — think baby oil, coconut oil and olive oil — loosens dead skin cells, which can help break down tan build-up. Grab the oil and apply a generous amount to your palms before massaging it into the skin. Let it soak for at least half an hour (the longer you keep it on, the better).
Most of the time it comes down to the PH of your skin, if any of your daily beauty routines and/or medications affect your skin's PH balance it will most definitely affect your spray tan results. Another interesting thing that might affect your spray tan is your period.
Loofahs, washcloths, brushes, and body washes with microbeads are all going to hasten the tan's departure. Your first shower after your spray tan will likely result in a puddle of colored water around your drain, but this is normal. As you leave the shower, make sure to pat yourself dry with the towel, don't rub.
Do I get my nails done before or after a spray tan?
If you are getting your nails done, it's always best to do so BEFORE your spray tan session. This is because when most nail techs do your nails, they soak your hand and feet in soapy water, sometimes even use wet, warm wash clothes to wipe your skin. These are all big no-no's when it comes to post-spray tan behavior!
Putting makeup on after your spray tan is okay, however you CANNOT wash your face until your initial shower. There is a bronzer in the solution, which means that you will have some color immediately after you are sprayed. The color will continue to darken as the solution develops.
Drench Your Skin in Baby Oil
One common household item could come of use is baby oil. Drench your skin in something like Johnson's Original Baby Oil ($5), and leave it on for five to 10 minutes—but no longer. "If left longer you will actually lock in the old tan," Evans explains.
Many drugstore soaps (Dove) and bar soaps leave an invisible film on your skin that will not allow the sunless tan to penetrate properly resulting in a streaky, discolored tan. Dove can also make your tan fade faster and has the ability to turn it brassy due to how it alters your skin's pH!
If you apply fake tan late in the day, then it's likely the product will transfer onto your bedding. Also, our body temperature rises while we're sleeping, which makes it more likely that you'll stain the fabric.
