We recommend waiting at least 4-8 hours after your spray tan before you shower for the first time, but don't wait more than 24 hours. When you shower for the first time after getting a spray tan, you'll probably see some golden glow wash down the drain, but don't worry!
Sitting down after a spray tan is fine if your clothes don't rub against your skin. If you want to be safe, wait at least 8 hours before sitting down after a spray tan. Also, wear dark, loose-fitting clothing and sit on something that won't leave marks on your skin.
Once you've washed off the colour guide and waited at least 8 hours, you can apply your favourite moisturiser to your entire body. Moisturising the skin everyday is the key to a longer lasting fake tan as it prevents the tan from cracking and flaking.
Loofahs, washcloths, brushes, and body washes with microbeads are all going to hasten the tan's departure. Your first shower after your spray tan will likely result in a puddle of colored water around your drain, but this is normal. As you leave the shower, make sure to pat yourself dry with the towel, don't rub.
Apply a moisturizer or body butter to shower damp skin. (NOT Curel or Dove – these can ruin tans!) A few good choices would be Shea Moisture, CeraVe, Lubriderm, Vanicream, or Hempz, and some people prefer pure Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, or Cocoa Butter.
Once you have showered, you will notice the bronzer washing away, leaving you looking tanned and glowing underneath. From this point on hydration is the key! Please note: the tan will continue to develop even after the shower, so do not be alarmed if you're not as tanned as you expect to be.
Avoid heavily fragranced lotions as well as acne products and retinols as these can strip your tan more quickly. Products to avoid both before and after your tan include: Dove, Aveeno, Eucerin, Bath & Body Works, Suave, Nivea, Neutrogena, Ivory, Lubriderm, Dial, Olay, acne products, exfoliating products, and retinol.
WAIT IT OUT. As a rule of thumb, you should wait for at least four to eight hours before showering so your tan can develop to its true color. Beyond that, it's best to wait 24 hours before washing your hair. This will give your tan time to set fully.
Why is my face so dark after a spray tan?
Spray tan on face is too dark
Most often, looking like you have too dark of a tan on your face is a result of literally using too much solution (remember: two ounces for the entire body, not just the neck up!) or being sprayed with a percentage that is too high for your skin type.
You can wash your face as normal after a spray tan. It's always good to note that seeing as you wash and touch your face more frequently the tan will always fade faster on your face. To maintain the tan on your face you can use tanning drops, tanning mousse, or gradual tanning lotions/sprays.
If you sleep with your airbrush tan still developing: it is crucial to sleep in a dark colored, long sleeve shirt and long pants that are loose fitting clothing after your tan. If you are getting your nails done, it's always best to do so BEFORE your spray tan session. This is because when most nail techs do your nails, they soak your hand and feet in soapy water, sometimes even use wet, warm wash clothes to wipe your skin. These are all big no-no's when it comes to post-spray tan behavior!
If your spray tan is looking streaky, blotchy or otherwise uneven, Evans says it can still be easily fixed. Basically, you're going to use self-tanner to fill in lighter patches and a moisturizer and exfoliator to address darker patches.

1. Aveeno Active Naturals Body Wash. This is a great body wash because it truly helps to keep the skin soft and moisturized after a warm shower, which is ideal for a spray tan. As you know, for a tan to last longer and look more natural, we need to keep our skin refreshed and moisturized.
LOTIONS Avoid any oils or lotions that use mineral oil (petroleum), baby oil, coconut oil, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (which is found in most body washes). I have found the best lotions to use are Aveeno, Cetaphil, Hempz, and CeraVe. Lotions with perfumes contain high alcohol levels and tend to dry out the skin.
Don't apply perfume, makeup, sunscreen or moisturizer until after your second shower. Toilet seats can pull the tan off of your skin, put toilet paper on the seat to avoid this.
