Can I put lotion on right after fake tan?
Once you've washed off the colour guide and waited at least 8 hours, you can apply your favourite moisturiser to your entire body. Moisturising the skin everyday is the key to a longer lasting fake tan as it prevents the tan from cracking and flaking.
Don't apply moisturizing lotion except in light amounts on your knees and elbows — the areas where tanner generally absorbs too much.
The answer is YES, but only after the self tan has fully developed. All Bali Body fake tan's take around 8 hours to fully develop and reach their maximum level of glow. Regardless of when you wash the colour guide off, we highly recommend you don't moisturise until the 8 hour mark.
Stand in front of a fan. This is a great way to speed up the drying process and in the warmer months, the perfect way to stay cool at the same time! Alternate your position occasionally to give different parts of your body a chance to dry faster.
Moisturize just before tanning
Fake tan can often cling to very dry areas, so make sure that your skin is well-hydrated. Use a moisturizer every day in the week leading up to tan application, then moisturize very dry areas, such as elbows, knees, ankles, feet and hands, 2 to 3 hours before tanning.
Another way to make your tan darker is to apply two layers of self-tan or to top your tan up the day after the initial application. However, this is probably best left to the more confident tanners among us.
Once you've primed your skin, it's important to leave it clean and clear before applying your fake tan — that means no moisturiser, deodorant, or perfume! Fake tan can sometimes accumulate on dry areas like hands, elbows, knees, and feet.
Avoid heavily fragranced lotions as well as acne products and retinols as these can strip your tan more quickly. Products to avoid both before and after your tan include: Dove, Aveeno, Eucerin, Bath & Body Works, Suave, Nivea, Neutrogena, Ivory, Lubriderm, Dial, Olay, acne products, exfoliating products, and retinol.
Once you've successfully self-tanned, wait until the products have dried completely before attempting to put on any clothes. We recommend at least 10 minutes, but keep checking any problem areas, such as under the arms or behind the knees, to see how they're drying. If you're still tacky, it's too early!
Apply a moisturizer or body butter to shower damp skin. (NOT Curel or Dove – these can ruin tans!) A few good choices would be Shea Moisture, CeraVe, Lubriderm, Vanicream, or Hempz, and some people prefer pure Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, or Cocoa Butter.
Can you do skincare over fake tan?
Sure, but be prepared for normal light peeling to look dramatically more intense! You will also need to be diligent about your tan re-application – any product that speeds up skin cell turnover in the epidermis (e.g. AHA, retinoids, azelaic acid), will decrease the longevity of your tan.
Very dry skin can affect how skin pick up the self-tanner's colour, and cause an uneven tan. Fortunately, this doesn't have to be the case. No matter how dry your skin is, you can still fake your way to a flawless tan while avoiding sun damage.

After applying your faux tanner, wait until it has completely dried before wrapping yourself in a towel, laying down, putting clothes on, or even sweating. (Pro tip: Turn your air conditioner down a few clicks).
Moisture is critical to good skin health because it helps maintain a good skin barrier and creates a flexible, pliable skin that is soft to touch. Moist skin will tan better and more evenly than dry skin.

Try using lemon and sugar to create a DIY tan removing scrub, or combine lemon or lime juice with baking soda for a fast-acting fake tan remover. Rub onto your body with a warm washer, then rinse thoroughly. Another winning kitchen combo? Olive oil and sugar.
Apply for more than 4 days in a row and you could risk your tan becoming darker than you'd like, says Michaella. She recommends taking things slowly until you get to know your product. "Try it for two consecutive days and check the colour. If you're happy on day two, don't go in again on day three.
We generally recommend sticking to the one self tanning product per application. If you do not find the colour to be as dark as you would expect, you can always apply a second coat 30-60 minutes after initial application or the following day if the developed colour is not to your desired colour depth.
(It should only take a couple of days.) Why it works: Mixing the self-tanner with moisturizer dilutes the formula a bit so the end results are much more subtle.

'Always keep you skin extra moisturised before, during and after tanning' says Pierotti, 'because the sun dries out your skin. ' After-sun lotions are great at giving sun-parched skin a dose of healthy hydration so keep applying it daily once you're home.
LOTIONS Avoid any oils or lotions that use mineral oil (petroleum), baby oil, coconut oil, and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (which is found in most body washes). I have found the best lotions to use are Aveeno, Cetaphil, Hempz, and CeraVe. Lotions with perfumes contain high alcohol levels and tend to dry out the skin.
You should advise your client to NOT use any commercial bar soaps either prior to the session and afterwards. Especially Dove soap, This is the worst thing to use and will cause the tan to fade and become patchy. It can also leave an invisible film preventing development of the spray tan.
On the morning of your spray tan, only moisturize problem areas like the elbows, feet and anywhere else with dry patches where the tan can stick. Moisturizing all over before your spray tan doesn't bode well for its lasting abilities and will result in a lighter tan.
We also recommend laying a towel over your pillow to prevent any bronzer transfer from your neck. Tend to sleep with your hand tucked up by your face? Slide your arm under the pillow so that the pillow acts as a barrier between the skin-on-skin.
