What is the vision care insurance? ›

A health benefit that at least partially covers vision care, like eye exams and glasses. All plans in the Health Insurance Marketplace ^® include vision coverage for children. Only some plans include vision coverage for adults.

By 2009, with international expansion, it was decided to change from VSP (Vision Service Plan) to VSP Global.

You can use the plan at any Vision Service Plan (VSP) network provider nationwide, including most Walmart Vision Centers and Sam's Club Optical. Before you get service, make sure ​your provider​ is ​in the​ VSP network.

There are a few differences between vision discount plans and insurance. The primary difference is that vision plans do not have a “deductible.” Medical insurance covers health problems, while vision plans provide benefits to standard check-ups and glasses.

With VSP LightCare™, you can use your frame and lens benefit to get non-prescription eyewear from your VSP® network doctor. VSP does not generally give out ID Cards, but they are available online for you to print. You also have the ability to change your VSP account information.

Shop at a Retail Store

Visionworks^® is in-network with VSP! You can easily use your vision benefits to buy eyewear at more than 700 retail locations nationwide.

We process your claim typically within seven (7) business days of submission, and send the reimbursem*nt amount to your payroll department. Your payroll department will reimburse you via their standard payroll process. Their processing time will vary.

Choice of Providers

Retail chains such as Walmart, Costco, Sam's Club, Visionworks and Pearle Vision are also included in the network. Log in to your VSP account or contact VSP for a complete listing of providers.

Can I use VSP online for glasses? ›

You can shop for glasses in person at your eye doctor's office, at a retail location like Visionworks^®, or online on Eyeconic, the VSP-preferred online store.

Members simply call a VSP network provider to schedule an appointment and tell them that they're a VSP member. The network provider and VSP handle the rest. If a member wishes to have an ID card, they can create an account and log in at vsp.com to print one.

UnitedHealthcare offers the most widely accepted vision insurance of the plans we reviewed.

Vision insurance plans don't cover everything related to eye care. Products and services that aren't covered depend on the insurer and policy, but common exclusions include: More than one eye exam per year. Non-prescription glasses and contacts.

The national average cost for eyeglass frames alone is $242 dollars. Like with an eye exam, your plan may cover frames totally or only partially. Either way, your purchase will come out cheaper with vision insurance than without.
