If you're coming here solely for academics, then this is the place for you! There are many research opportunities and the classes are pretty challenging so if you like that then you'll like this school. Don't come here expecting a big social scene -- the campus is majority commuters and on top of that it's a generally quiet school. I'm not saying it's impossible to go to parties and find more extroverted people to hang out with (cause I'm sure you can), I'm just saying not to set your expectations too high. Also, don't eat the chicken here, there's something wrong with it.

I am a rising sophom*ore at UMBC and my first year experience was alright. The teachers are seemingly lenient and helpful if you make an effort to get help. The academics is challenging in the sense that some classes only have a few assignments that will effect your overall grade. With great work ethic and determination, academic success is more than possible. The dorms (PTAP) were okay, I liked how each floor had its own lounge with a kitchen. I wished the design was less dull and more modern. The bathrooms were incredibly small and it just didn't seem right to make the bathrooms that small. I really think all the freshman dorms need an interior and exterior make over, it just looks depressing. The dining hall food was tolerable but could've been better. It often felt like the dishes were whimsical and cheap. I feel like more than often they offered us the bare minimum and a lot of people complained of gut issues as a cause of eating dining hall food.

Overall, the professors are average. Some are very good, some are okay, and others are unhelpful and do not make lecture engaging or valuable. The campus is empty on the weekends. There are usually activities and events happening on the weekdays and weekends, but they are not usually interesting enough for most residential students to regularly stay on campus over the weekend. Also, most of the restaurants and places to eat and drink on campus are closed on the weekend. Those that are open have limited hours.
