Overview

Savvy Rest’s natural Dunlop latex is certified organic in two ways. First, the rubber tree plantations are certified organic according to USDA standards. Second, the processing stage is certified organic to the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). In addition, Savvy Rest use GOTS certified wool and unbleached, GOTS certified organic cotton.

Savvy Rest’s SerenitySpring mattress (View on Savvy Rest) includes 3″ of natural latex over customizable pocketed-coil springs. You can choose between several firmness options for softer Talalay or firmer Dunlop for your latex layer and can choose between firm and plush for your spring layer, with options to customize the right and left sides of the bed. Prices range from $1,799 to $3,699 with standard sizes available. The springs are individually encased in PLA (a plant-derived polymer), which minimized motion transfer, and the mattress includes organic cotton and wool batting as a natural flame retardant and an organic cotton encasem*nt.

The Earthspring™ mattress (View on Savvy Rest) is Greenguard GOLD certified and is an affordable innerspring mattress made without chemical flame retardants and ideal for children or small adults. It is available in Twin, Twin XL, Full, and Queen sizes only and ranges in price from $999 to $1,599. The recycled steel springs are Bonnell design, meaning this mattress is best for a solo sleeper. The spring layer is sandwiched between sheets of coconut fiber blended with natural latex, and topped by a 3” layer of Dunlop latex. The mattress also features certified organic wool batting and it is encased in an organic cotton casing that does not open (because this mattress system isn’t customizable).

The Earthspring mattress has a soft, comforting feel with cushion, support, and some bounce like a conventional coil mattress. Overall, it has a medium firm feel and has a total height of 9”.

Unfortunately, because of Savvy Rest’s stubborn return policy, you can’t return their mattresses unless there’s a manufacturing defect. They say this is because ‘allowing returns would require us to spray our products with chemicals in order to “clean” and resell them, harming the purity of our natural materials’. Plenty of other, much smaller, mattress companies do allow such returns however, and simply donate the mattresses to charities.

Happily, Savvy Rest make a bit of an exception for the Serenity mattresses, which are eligible for their90-day Latex Exchange.Savvy Rest mattresses are on the expensive side, but that’s because they’re custom made for your body and sleep preferences. And, if you find that your mattress isn’t quite working for you, they’ll work with you to figure out which layer to switch out and to what.

In terms of corporate social responsibility, Savvy Rest have a Safe Sleep Pillows Program, which works to donate new pillows for women and children who arrive at domestic violence shelters across the US. When the new arrivals at these emergency shelters move on to find more permanent housing, they can take their new Savvy Rest pillow with them.

Savvy Rest are also employee owned (as of 2012), meaning that staff are more invested in the company’s growth and in customer satisfaction. Employee owned companies tend to create a better experience for employees and for customers.

Savvy Rest are also a certified B Corporation, demonstrating a commitment to sustainability and good working conditions, and they donate a portion of profits to American Forests, the oldest nonprofit conservation organization in the US, which helps to restore and maintain threatened forest ecosystems across the country and around the globe. Savvy Rest is also a member of the Carbon Fund, through which they support reforestation along the Mississippi River, a vital habitat for migratory birds. Reforestation is a key part of efforts to mitigate climate change.

Savvy Rest vs. OMI, Soaring Heart, and Avocado

If you’re looking for a combination of quality, cost, customization, reputation, CSR, and eco-friendly credentials, Savvy Rest are a great option for a mattress. Savvy Rest’s Greenguard Gold certified Earthspring™ mattress ranges in price from $999 to $1,599, making it both affordable and highly-credentialed, and all from a company with B Corp status and a robust charitable giving program. Savvy Rest also offer their higher-end Serenity Spring mattress which ranges from $1,799 to $3,699 and offers a little more in the way of luxury and customization.

For more eco-credentials, OMI are your best bet, especially if you have multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS) or simply want a high-quality mattress free from toxic chemicals and made with care from sustainably and humanely sourced materials. OMI mattresses carry more certifications than Savvy Rest, Soaring Heart, Naturepedic, and every other mattress on the market. They have been rigorously tested and found to be durable and high-performance, and their REST collection is comparable in price to most other eco-friendly innerspring mattresses with fewer certifications.

OMI’s innerspring mattresses range from $1,699-$3,899, compared to Soaring Heart’s $3,499-$5,499. Avocado’s innerspring models range from $959-$2,199, while Naturepedic’s range from $1199-$4,799. My Green Mattress’s Natural Escape mattress ranges in price from $829-$1,594, while their Pure Echo ranges from $640-$1,389. Eco Terra’s innerspring mattresses are the cheapest of all at $549-$1,099, possibly for good reason, though.

In terms of performance, Savvy Rest mattresses have a good reputation for being comfortable and durable, although their innerspring mattresses haven’t yet been tested by Consumer Reports. Avocado’s Green Mattress (View on Avocado) won top place for innerspring mattresses in Consumer Reports’ most recent round-up, but Avocado carry fewer eco-certifications haven’t been in the game as long as Savvy Rest.

If you’re itching to buy a latex-free innerspring mattress that is eco-friendly and offers good support, Soaring Heart are your top choice. Their ‘Made in Seattle’ reputation and commitment to eco-friendliness is commendable, and their customers adore their mattresses.

If you’d rather not have wool in your mattress, you’re out of luck with Savvy Rest, and with Soaring Heart. Instead, your best bet is Avocado’s Vegan Mattress (an innerspring model made without wool or any other animal products), or Naturepedic’s all-latex EOS Trilux model.

Savvy Rest are also rather miserly in terms of their return policy. Unlike most other companies, they just don’t do returns, claiming that to do so would necessitate them spraying their products with toxic chemicals. Other companies have a policy of arranging donations of returned mattresses to local shelters and such, so it seems odd that Savvy Rest won’t do the same. They do, however, have a pillow donation program.

In contrast, OMI offer a 90-day sleep trial and a 20-year limited warranty on all mattresses, which is comparable to most other companies in the eco-friendly mattress market. Avocado and My Green Mattress both have a 100-night sleep trial and offer a 25-year limited warranty, for instance (full 10 year, then prorated). If you don’t want to keep the mattress after your 100 nights, My Green Mattress will work with you to donate it to a local charity and then refund your money. Most Naturepedic mattresses (EOS Series, Serenade, Halcyon, and Vegan) come with a limited 20-year warranty. This includes full repair and replacement within the first 10 years and a pro-rated warranty for the remaining ten. The Chorus mattresses and baby and kids mattresses have a 10-year warranty.

In terms of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and charitable giving, Savvy Rest are better than most. Soaring Heart are like OMI and don’t have anything going on. Naturepedic are members of 1% for the Planet, at least, although they don’t seem to do much else. Swiss Dream Beds (a much smaller company) and Avocado have quite robust charitable giving programs.

All in all, OMI’s REST mattress is your best bet for a non-toxic, eco-friendly, high-quality, innerspring mattress at a great price point as long as latex isn’t an issue. If you’re looking for a budget option, choose My Green Mattress or Savvy Rest’s Earthspring model. Be sure to check your mattress needs against the configurations available from all of these companies, however, as your particular requirements may be better served by one than the others.
