Spent 3 miserable months, accumulating information for QBE, who constantly required more and more unnecessary documentation on my claim. A tactic used to hopefully persuade me to give up and forget the claim. I persisted and was at one stage advised the claim would be allowed and I'd be repaid the $500 I wast claiming on pre paid accommodation due to a lengthy plane delay. The same day they wrote to say they'd changed their minds and requested yet again more info. I got that and sent it on again! Finally some flimsy excuse and no claim accepted. Travel insurance with them is a total waste of money.

I was really disappointed with the handling of my travel insurance claim. The lack of transparency and informed financial consent is astounding. In healthcare, informed consent from patients is critical and I don't understand why the insurance companies get away with it time and time again. My luggage was lost on the way to my holiday and my insurance policy had an allowance for replacing essential items. I called them personally to understand the process, read the policy on lost and delayed baggage and agreed to the 300 dollar excess. On return and submitting my claim, they tell me I have to send back all items purchased plus pay the 300 dollar excess. I don't understand where the value for me was in this process? It just ended up costing me more money - had they given me accurate information I would have chosen a different path. The customer service is very obstructive - no empathy or understanding. When choosing your travel insurance, I would strongly advise a different company - I know some of them have structures that offer you a daily allowance for lost or stolen luggage and they certainly don't make you send back your old and used items in the end!

My dad was about to go visit his family but unfortunately, my mum's health deteriorated so he had to cancel his trip. She unfortunately also passed away not long after. This was all very sudden, and my mum although was diagnosed with cancer (this was over 7 years ago) has been really well with no symptoms, hence my dad was going to go on the short trip (this was by himself). When my dad tried to claim it, due to the sudden deterioration of my mum's health, QBE made him go through so many hoops even though he had to cope with the grief. He initially got a letter from the specialist, but this was not enough, he had to get a dr to fill in a "form". Then apparently the "form" was not the "current" one, so he had to go back to the dr to fill in an almost identical form. This was then rejected again as "not enough information". It was not until the fourth time, that we got a response, and it was to reject the claim and it was because my mum was 'diagnosed' before the policy was taken out. Something I don't understand, because the policy was for my dad and not my mum. My dad can't even make a claim because he had to cancel a trip because a loved one was unwell? The process took almost six months as well. My dad made the claim before my mum passed away as she was in hospital, and we did not get the response 3 months after she passed away.

I had top tier QBE travel insurance. My phone was stolen in Cuba. I assembled all the correct documentation, including a Cuban police report. QBE required that I provide a receipt for the phone, beyond just the monthly bill. I wasted time going to the original store I bought it from to get this. The phone cost $1,176. After all this, QBE offered to return $450. The cheapest Australian retailer I could find publishing a current price for the model of phone was Big W at $800.When I contested QBE's quote of $450, they directed me to a interstate 'retailer' with no street address (just a PO Box), no online store and no published price. The business was registered to a residential address. I contacted QBE three times contesting the $450 remittance. They just kept providing details for the Melbourne retailer. The $450 quote is cheaper than Hong Kong eBay resellers, who offer no Australian warranty. I had zero interest in dealing with an interstate group sourcing an international phone with no local warranty support, so now I am significantly out of pocket on my replacement phone.

Warning to all Americans and visitors to Australia. QBE travel insurance for Qantas is a farce. They do not even deserve a one star! I was unable to take a trip due to my mom being in the ICU. I submitted all the necessary documents. Reason for denial..Relative(s) is limited to a relative of yours, or of a member of the travelling party, who is resident in Australia or New Zealand. It means a spouse, defacto partner, parent, parent in-law, daughter, son, daughter-in- law, son-in-law, brother, sister, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchildren, grandparent, step-parent, step-children, fiancee or fiance, or guardian. I am traveling from abroad and obviously my mom is not from Australia or NZ. So why even try to sell travel insurance to me ? Thieves! They just want to make a buck off of you!

Don’t expect your claim process to be as quick and easy as purchasing your policy! We missed an international connection because our 1st flight was cancelled. We had to pay out of pocket almost $2,000 to replace the flight we missed. QBE have an exclusion clause in their fine print “the cancellation or delay of travel arrangements due to mechanical breakdown of transportation or failure of the carrier to operate this service”. Our Qantas flight was cancelled due to mechanical issues. Also, they state that claims are processed within 3-10 working days. Our claim was submitted on 24/7/18 and only finalised today, 17/8/18, after numerous phone calls. Do your homework! This is the only company I know of with this exclusion. Our daughters claim on her online travel insurance company for the same events, was paid out promptly with no questions asked.

This exclusion is staggering. I just bought this insurance via qantas, and wanted to do a bit of research to know what to expect. Won't be buying this product again.

Actually as I was on my 14 day cooling off period under Australian consumer law, I just cancelled this and got my money back. Will spend it on a reputable company without weird exclusions.

I recently traveled to Europe and after missing a connection had to spend the day in the Frankfurt Germany airport and as a result had to buy an entire new airline ticket. I had travel delay insurance with QBE however after delaying my claim for six months it was denied with QBE stating that the delay was due to my air carrier going bankrupt. The airline did stop operations but not for six Months after I had returned. You have been warned. Avoid this company like the plague.

Made a claim for lost go pro during travel to Coffs Harbour. Was placed in carry on side pocket of bag and got lost on flight from Perth. When I made a claim I was informed that carry on isn’t covered in standard cover (which means none of your personal and valuable effects are covered during travel). Stay away and save your money on these ones!

QBE continuously go back and forward with extra requests.
They use stalling tactics and not competent in their jobs.

They also require over and above the information required.

e.g Information that is very personal and a breach of the doctor patient confidentiality law . Doctors have a legal, professional and ethical duty to a patient’s privacy and confidentiality regarding their personal health information according to the Australian Medical Association.

I will not go with this company ever again...

I had the same experience a few years ago and after a six month battle, they finally paid up. My claim was genuine, I had appropriate medical evidence as requested by them and they tried everything they could think of to justify rejecting my claim. It was only after I sought advice from the Office of Fair Traing and a solicitor, and threatened legal action, they finally reconsidered. I feel sure they only did so after I made it clear that I would not give up.
