Don't be a tit - don't forget the nipple!

46% of people risk painful sunburnt nipples when sunbathing - and increase their risk of skin cancer

We all know the risks of sunbathing, especially when a reliable sun protection product isn't used. But a survey carried out by natural skincare brand lavera has found that 46% of people don't protect their nipples with sun cream.

Nipples are a particularly sensitive part of the body, and therefore are more prone to sunburn- which can lead to flaky skin and itchiness. And of course it's a known fact that exposure to the sun is one of the biggest causes of skin cancer - the most common type of cancer amongst people with paler complexions with more than 112,000 cases diagnosed in the UK each year, resulting in more than 5,000 deaths.

So lavera are reminding people not to forget the nipple:

Graeme Hume from lavera says: 'Extra attention should be paid when applying sun cream to the nipple area, because the skin is thinner and more susceptible to burning. Use a higher factor than you'd normally use on the rest of your body. We'd recommend using at least factor 15 with a UVA and UVB protection, and remember with lavera Mineral Sun protection you don't need to wait 20 minutes before you go out in the sun.

"Products with natural ingredients such as Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide are kinder to skin than some conventional sun protection products, which may contain potentially harmful chemicals including oxybenzone, which has been linked to potential cell damage that may lead to skin cancer.

“Men can also tend to forget the importance of applying sunscreen to all parts of the body - remember it's not just the face and arms that it should be applied to. Even if you don't get sunburnt, without UVA and UVB filters, skin can still be exposed to sun damage and a heightened risk of skin cancer."

lavera's survey found that 10% of people have previously burnt their nipples and the findings come as a reminder to men to make sure they pay extra attention to covering their nipples when sunbathing. In fact, nipple burning can be even more of a serious problem for men as they are more likely than women to sunbathe topless.

Finding from lavera's 'Don't forget the Nipple' survey :

• 47% of respondents sunbathe topless, with 19% of people under the age of 54 regularly doing so.

• 11% of people have burnt their nipples while sunbathing.

• 46% of people never apply sun protection to their nipples.

• 35% of people treat all parts of their body the same when applying sun protection.

• Only 18% of people would use a higher SPF on their nipples than the rest of their body.
