Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate!

Bathe or shower in warm water and use a product for exfoliating instead of using a regular soap. Exfoliation tends to scrub off the dead skin cells, which have been dyed by the spray tan solution – so it’s great if you have tacky build-up in particular places.

Exfoliate with the help of scrubs, sponges, andexfoliation mitts, which are all easily found in beauty stores if you don’t already have these on hand. Make sure your don’t use a scrub which makes your skin oily and do not over-scrub so that your skin does not become irritated because that will make your next tan just as bad.

Also if you love relaxing in a good, hot bath anyway, the longer you spend in the bath, the more your tan wash off as a warm bath opens the skins’ pores where the tan has embedded itself. So why not kick back in the tub to relax and remove the fake tan at the same time?

DIY Self Tan Eraser

Or for the tanners who are handy at making their own concoctions or don’t have the time to purchase an eraser, there are a few little tricks that you can use with things you probably already have around the house in the bathroom or kitchen:

  • Add olive oil or baby oil to the warm water in the tub. Oil tends to loosen the dead skin cells, which are dyed brown by the tanning solution.
  • Bathing in baking soda mixed with warm water is commonly used for removing fake tan
  • Lemon juice acts like a bleaching agent and removes the dark pigmentation formed on the skin after spray tanning. Either apply lemon juice with a washcloth over the tanned regions, or make this simple mixture at home: mix a cup of sugar with ¾ cup lemon juice. Rub this mixture on your skin and wash off after a few minutes with warm water. This is an effective way on how to remove a fake tan only when done a few times!
  • ORmix half cup of baking powder with half cup of lemon juice. Apply the paste on the skin and leave it on for a few minutes. Wipe off with a cloth and repeat the process a few times.

Hair removal = tan removal?

Waxing or shaving your legs is a great way to get rid of the tan. These hair removal methods also remove the upper layer of the skin, which has been dyed. Even hair removal cream can work its charm as it strips the tan off the skin. But keep in mind this may only reduce color rather than totally eliminate it as a lot of self tanning products can develop quite deep into the skin (which is usually a good thing!) which is why a product made specifically for removal is usually your best option for full removal.
