Can you tan with sunscreen, or does it prevent tanning? (2024)

For a complexion without sunburn, it is important to select the correct sunscreen with the appropriate SPF and you can still tan with it. This choice depends on the phototype of each person. According to Fitzpatrick's classification, skins are categorized into 6 phototypes defined according to hair color, skin tone, frequency of sunburn and type of tanning:

Individuals with red hair, freckles and a pale complexion (phototype I) and those with blond hair and fair skin (phototype II) should opt for SPF 50 sun protection.

Light-skinned chestnut individuals (phototype III) or brown/chestnut individuals with slightly matt skin (phototype IV) should opt for a sun protection factor of 30 or even 50 and can still be tanning.

  • Phototypes V and VI: SPF 15 to 30:

For mixed to dark skin of phototype V or black skin of phototype VI, a sun protection factor of 15 to 30 is sufficient for protection.
