Blogging for Moms: Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Make Money at Home (2024)

Blogging for Moms: Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Make Money at Home (1)You’ve probably heard that blogging for moms is an amazing way to make money online from home!

For a long time, I debated whether or not I should start a mom blog too – I wanted to share recipes for the dishes I was posting on Instagram.

So, why was spending $6.95 a month on a blog so hard compared to buying a cup of coffee for the same price?

My guess?

A fear of not knowing!

You’re starting something brand new and you have no idea what to expect.

How much learning will you have to do?

Will you have time to work on it?

What should you write about?

And you’re right, these are all important things to consider!

Starting a blog doesn’t mean you get one opportunity to choose the right topic though.

It’s ok to change your mind later on – I sure did!

And this is one of the things that I love most about blogging– it’s incredibly flexible.

With a blog, you can:

  • learn and grow at your own pace
  • work as much or as little as you like
  • set your own hours
  • stay at home with your little ones!

This guide covers what it means to be a mom blogger in addition to things you should do before you start a mom blog.

We’ll answer questions like:

  • What is blogging?
  • What does a blogger do?
  • How do you start a blog?
  • What should you do before you start a blog?
  • How to become a mom blogger
  • Good blogging topics for mom bloggers

I’ll share my experience in addition to a few tips for turning your work at home dreams into a reality!

Blogging for Moms: Easy Step-by-Step Guide to Make Money at Home

Let’s talk about the basics first!

What is blogging?

Blogging is the actual writing and maintenance of a “blog”.

Thanks to amazing blogging platforms like WordPress though, new bloggers don’t need to worry about learning any technical stuff.

You can simply sign up for hosting and start writing or customizing your website – there are even pre-made blog themes you can download if you want a blog that’s ready to go!

What does a blogger do?

Bloggers spend the majority of their time writing and promoting content.

Many of the pins you see on Pinterest were created by bloggers and are a perfect example of how a blogger promotes their work!

When you’re not writing or promoting, you might be optimizing your site but again, you don’t need to know anything technical.

The WordPress blogging platform features access to a ton of amazing “plugins” that take care of all of this.

Think of plugins on your blog like apps for your phone – they can make it easier for you or your readers to do stuff on your site.

For example:

  • you can display an Instagram feed on your page
  • show your favourite Pinterest boards
  • make your site load super fast, etc.

How to Become a Mom Blogger

To become a mom blogger, you need two things: hosting and a blogging platform.

I host my blog with Siteground and use the WordPress blogging platform.

Think of hosting like renting an apartment for your blog – you’re essentially paying for a place on the internet where your blog will live!

A blogging platform is software that publishes your content on the internet.

I highly recommend Siteground for starting a mom blog – they offer incredible support for new bloggers and their hosting plans are super affordable.

You can create a blog now for $6.95 a month with Siteground.

What comes with Siteground hosting?

You get all of the following:

  • one-click WordPress installation
  • affordable monthly price
  • easy to use – even for someone with zero technical skills!
  • FREE website builder – WordPress is the best blogging platform around!
  • FREE daily backups of your site
  • FREE website transfer if you’re moving your blog from somewhere else – this is what I did and they made it so easy for me!
  • FREE Super SG Optimizer Plugin – makes your site load super fast among other cool perks!
  • 24/7 support – phone, online chat, or ticket!

I phone Siteground whenever I have a question and have never waited longer than 2 minutes to get connected with someone – they’ve helped me do everything from set up my email to improve my page speed!

As moms, we’re faced with all sorts of unique challenges.

Our job is 24/7 and while sometimes exhausting, it’s the most rewarding one in the world.

The following 5 things are important to do before you start a mom blog – don’t worry, you won’t have any homework and can complete all of them as you go 🙂

Before You Start a Blog: 5 Things Mom Should Do

1. Ask yourself why you want to start a blog – and answer honestly!

There are so many reasons for moms blogging!

Consider a few of the following reasons to start a mom blog:

  • you can work from home
  • you can spend more time with your kids!
  • blogging as an outlet
  • it’s a cheap hobby that’s easy to start
  • blogging has an unlimited income potential – no salary caps when you’re your own boss!
  • it’s a great way to stay connected with family and friends
  • it helps keep your mind active
  • blogging helps you stay organized

There is only one bad reason to start a blog:

“I want to make money fast doing something easy.”

Yikes.

This doesn’t describe blogging at all.

Just like when you start a new job, there’s a bit of learning involved in starting a mom blog.

However, the path you take depends entirely on how you want to go about it and your means!

You don’t need to buy blogging courses but they do provide structure and help some people learn more quickly.

When I got serious about blogging, we were in the midst of huge renovations in our new house – we did everything from replacing a completely unusable kitchen (literally, not one appliance was working!) to re-carpeting.

It was expensive and I wanted to save what I had for blogging tools rather than e-books.

I read a ton of blog posts and books on Kindle – I signed up for a Kindle Unlimited trial that cost me pennies and made it a habit to read every night after my little girl went to bed.

Starting a mom blog and learning how to grow it was the best decision I ever made for my family.

I wanted to work from home so I could be with my little girl full-time.

I think this is one of the best parts about blogging for moms.

2. Designate an area in your home where you will work on your blog

Choose a place in your home and reserve it as a blogging space.

For me, this is a little area in our living room where I’ve set up a desk and office chair.

I have a map of Zagreb and a white wire organizer with my business card and inspirational ideas clipped to it!

You want to feel happy when you go to work and you also want to be focused.

Reserving a space just for writing will help your mind shift more quickly when it’s time to do a little blogging!

Here’s my Pinterest board for Office Decor to help you get inspired and design a space that makes you feel unstoppable.

3. Invest in a quality agenda

I like using an agenda (I really like this one!) or desk calendar that I can constantly have displayed somewhere.

Maybe you’re a visual person too!

It’s nice to be able to have your goals in front of you at all times – for me, they feel like a reality this way.

One of my mom’s favourite phrases is:

“Out of sight, out of mind”

For me, this applies to home storage solutions, burying foods in your freezer that you’ll probably forget about, and goals!

Instead of using a digital organizer, proudly display what you want to achieve somewhere obvious to keep yourself motivated.

4. Start scheduling working hours during your days

Time management gets easier with practice.

So, start writing out an itinerary for your days and see where you can squeeze time in to work on your blog.

Things come up, especially for parents but the more you plan your days ahead, the more focused you will be on achieving those goals.

I like to set a maximum of two of three goals for my blog daily – with a toddler, it can be a challenge for me to accomplish more than that.

These could be any of the following things:

  • Create a new pin for Pinterest
  • Schedule new pins to Tailwind
  • Promote a new post on Instagram stories
  • Respond to emails
  • Create a to-do list of things I want to accomplish on my blog
  • Write a blog post – realistically, I publish at a rate of about once a week because my content is long-form (2,000+ words). Your posts might be shorter, especially when you’re just starting out.

Maybe you only respond to one email!

That’s ok.

Blogging for moms is a bit more challenging than it is for others because we prioritize our families – but with a little extra scheduling, it’s easily done.

Every time you work on your blog, you’ll feel a little more confident – things will get easier to do and the more you write, the more amazing new ideas you’ll have.

This list of 30 daily blogging and social media tasks features things you can do in under 30 minutes. Start adding a couple of these to your daily schedule to promote your blog’s growth.

5. Create a vision board – this can be done in the form a Pinterest board

Find a few bloggers or influencers that inspire you!

Hopefully you like my work and want to give me a follow*end shameless self-promotion* haha

Pin your ideas to a board called “blog”, “online business”, or something like that.

Save things like:

  1. inspiring blog posts
  2. pin designs
  3. office decor
  4. colour palettes
  5. anything that resembles who you want to be!

It sounds kind of weird to think of yourself as a brand but that’s exactly what we’re starting to do here.

Consider the following:

  • how do you want to make people feel?
  • what do you want to do with your blog?

With my blog, I aim to get women excited about taking charge of their lives.

I chose three bold colours: hot pink, black, and turquoise because to me, that says fiercely feminine and in control.

Sticking to these colours also helps my readers recognize my pins and brand.

To create your brand, start with something as simple as choosing a colour you like.
